Undersoil Pitch Heating – Mole Plough Installation

Undersoil heating is a specialist process that transforms natural and hybrid turf pitches into reliable, all-weather playing surfaces.

The system works by installing a network of durable heating pipes beneath the pitch, at Chappelow’s we use a precise method known as mole ploughing, which places the pipework directly into the lower rootzone without disturbing the surface.

How the System Works

Once installed, warm water circulates through the pipe network from an energy centre located adjacent to the pitch. The heat gently rises through the rootzone, maintaining soil temperatures above freezing point. This prevents frost formation, aids moisture movement, and creates a stable, playable surface even in the harshest winter conditions.

Key Benefits of Undersoil Heating

Improved Pitch Availability

Keeps surfaces playable during frost, snow, and low temperatures, significantly reducing postponed fixtures and training cancellations.

Enhanced Player Safety

Prevents hard, frozen ground and reduces the risk of impact injuries.

Protection of the Turf Surface

Maintains healthy root activity through colder months, supporting stronger grass growth and faster post-match recovery.

Rapid Recovery & Reduced Disruption

Mole plough installation avoids major excavation, meaning quicker project completion and minimal impact on the existing pitch.

Consistent Playing Performance

Delivers uniform ground conditions across the entire surface, meeting the expectations of professional sport.

Extended Growing Season

Soil temperatures remain more stable, encouraging year-round root development and improved sward density.

Undersoil heating is now considered an essential investment for modern sports facilities, ensuring maximum pitch usage, improved surface quality, and a reliable schedule throughout the winter season.
